Moths Are Quiet. The Damage They Leave Behind Is Not.

Most people blame moths but never actually see them. That’s because adult moths don’t cause the damage. Their larvae do. Tiny cream-coloured grubs hatch from eggs laid in dark, undisturbed spaces and spend weeks feeding on whatever surrounds them. By the time you spot the damage, the infestation has been running for a while.

Melbourne 24×7 Pest Control treats moth infestations across Melbourne homes, storage facilities, and commercial properties. We find the species, locate the breeding areas, treat every life stage, and give you a clear plan to stop it coming back. We’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Two Types of Moths. Two Very Different Problems.

Getting the species right changes everything about how we treat it.

Clothes Moths

Clothes moths go after natural fibres. Wool, silk, cashmere, cotton, fur, and leather are all targets. They don’t fly toward light like most moths. They hide from it.

Dark wardrobes, undisturbed drawers, blanket boxes, and linen cupboards are exactly where they want to be. The adult moth doesn’t eat fabric at all. She lays eggs on or near natural fibres. The larvae that hatch do the feeding, chewing through material to extract the protein keratin.

The items most at risk are the ones you don’t touch often. The expensive wool coat you haven’t worn since last winter. The cashmere blanket at the bottom of the linen cupboard. The heirloom rug rolled up in the spare room.

By the time you notice irregular holes or thinning patches, the larvae have been feeding for weeks.

Pantry Moths

Pantry moths target stored dry food. Flour, rice, oats, cereals, nuts, dried fruit, spices, pet food, and birdseed are all common targets. They enter homes through contaminated packaging, often already present before the item leaves the supermarket shelf.

Look for fine webbing inside packets, small larvae crawling up walls or across the ceiling near the pantry, and eggs inside dry food containers. The adult is small with distinctive copper-coloured wingtips. You’ll often spot it flying around the kitchen in the evening.

One infested packet can quickly spread to surrounding containers. Pantry moth numbers grow fast once they get started.

Why DIY Moth Products Rarely Work

Moth balls, cedar blocks, lavender sachets, and retail sprays all share the same problem.

None of them kill eggs or larvae hiding deep in fabric or inside food packaging.

Cedar and lavender repel adult moths to some degree. They do nothing against an active infestation already in progress. Retail products sit on surfaces. Larvae hide in exactly the spots those treatments never reach. Deep in carpet pile. Inside tightly packed wardrobe shelves. At the base of wool rugs where the pile meets the backing. Behind pantry kickboards.

Professional treatment uses residual insecticide applied to all harbouring zones, targeted treatment of infested areas, and pheromone monitoring traps. That combination eliminates what’s already active and prevents reinfestation through ongoing monitoring.

How We Treat Moth Infestations

Every job starts with a proper inspection. We identify the species, find the active breeding areas, and work out how far the infestation has spread.

For clothes moths, treatment covers wardrobes, drawers, storage areas, carpets, rugs, curtains, and soft furnishings. We focus on undisturbed areas and storage spaces where larvae feed most actively.

For pantry moths, we work through the kitchen and pantry systematically. We identify contaminated products, treat shelving, cracks, and the areas behind and beneath cabinetry, and give you clear advice on what to discard and how to store replacements properly.

We always follow up after the initial treatment. Moths have a life cycle that produces new larvae after the first application. The follow-up catches anything that survived.

FAQ - Moth Control Melbourne

Almost certainly yes.

Clothes moths avoid light and human activity. You rarely see them flying around. The larvae do the damage in dark, undisturbed spots inside your wardrobe or storage area.

Pull everything out and check carefully for small cream-coloured grubs, fine silky webbing on fabric surfaces, and tiny pale eggs caught in fibres or along seams. Check the back corners of shelves and the inside of any storage bags.

If you find those signs, the infestation is active and needs treating now before more items are damaged.

Removing visibly infested products is a good start. But pantry moths lay eggs in places that are very easy to miss.

Check every sealed packet in your pantry, not just the ones that look affected. Larvae get through cardboard packaging easily and hide inside boxes that look intact from the outside. The cracks along shelf edges, the gap between shelving and the wall, and the space under pull-out drawers all harbour eggs and larvae.

Unless we treat those areas and remove every contaminated product, the cycle continues. A systematic inspection and treatment of the full pantry area is what finally breaks it.

Yes. Clothes moths and carpet moths both target natural fibres in floor coverings and upholstery.

Wool carpets, silk rugs, wool-blend area rugs, and natural fibre curtains all attract them. The damage starts in low-traffic areas. The edges of rooms under furniture, under sofas and beds, and in corners where a rug folds are the most common infestation sites.

A rug stored rolled up in a spare room is particularly at risk. By the time you unroll it and notice the damage, the infestation has often been active for months.

Clothes moth activity peaks during Melbourne’s warmer months, roughly October through to April. Warmer temperatures speed up the life cycle, so eggs hatch faster and larvae develop more quickly over summer.

That said, a heated home keeps an established infestation active year-round regardless of the season outside.

Pantry moths don’t follow the same seasonal pattern at all. They live in the controlled environment of your pantry and stay active throughout the year.

Yes. This is one of the most common ways clothes moths enter a property.

Second-hand wool, silk, or cashmere clothing, vintage rugs, and upholstered furniture from markets, op shops, or online classifieds can all carry moth eggs or larvae without any visible sign.

Before bringing any natural fibre second-hand item indoors, inspect it carefully in good light. Dry cleaning kills all life stages. Sealing items in a bag and freezing them for at least 72 hours at below-18 degrees also kills eggs and larvae.

If holes in clothing appeared shortly after you brought home a second-hand item, that item is almost certainly the source.

For most treatments, we ask that people and pets stay out of treated rooms while products dry. That typically takes one to two hours.

Once surfaces are dry, you can use treated areas normally. We give you specific instructions before we start, including how to handle pantry contents if we’re treating a kitchen. We walk you through everything clearly so there are no surprises.

Regular vacuuming is the single most effective prevention measure for carpet moths.

Most people don’t vacuum often enough in the right spots. The edges of rooms, under furniture, and beneath large rugs are where larvae feed and thrive. Vacuum those areas thoroughly and regularly.

Lift and vacuum under large rugs every few months. Move furniture occasionally to disrupt the dark, undisturbed environment moths need. For rugs going into storage, clean them thoroughly before rolling and use sealed storage bags rather than loose plastic.

Cedar blocks inside storage help deter adult moths but won’t control an active infestation on their own.

Yes, and the financial impact can be significant.

A clothes moth infestation in a clothing store damages unsold stock fast. In a hotel, moths chewing through linen and blankets in storage create ongoing replacement costs and guest complaints. In a food warehouse or restaurant, pantry moths contaminate stock, create compliance issues, and fail food safety inspections.

We work with commercial clients across all these sectors. For food businesses, we provide documentation of treatment for compliance records.

New fabric damage stops appearing. Larvae activity in affected areas ceases completely. Pheromone traps left after treatment capture significantly fewer adults week by week.

For pantry moths, no new webbing or larvae appear after all contaminated products go out and replacements sit in sealed containers.

If you notice continuing activity after treatment, call us straight away. Our follow-up visit targets anything that survived the initial application. If activity continues beyond that, we reassess and retreat at no extra cost.
